The State Library of Western Australia would like to share the great news that we are opening the $10,000 J.S. Battye Memorial Fellowship again in 2024. For the first time, the State Library is also offering a $10,000 Fellowship for Aboriginal Researchers and two $20,000 Researcher-in-Residence opportunities.

Battye Fellowship ($10,000)

The Battye Fellowship is designed to enhance understanding of Western Australia through research based on the State Library’s heritage collections. Applications are open to Western Australian residents who are historians, curators or scholars with demonstrated knowledge and experience in the fields of West Australian history or heritage. The Fellowship will result in one report and public presentation outlining the research findings and new understanding about the significance of State Library collections.

Fellowship for Aboriginal Researchers ($10,000)

The Fellowship for Aboriginal Researchers has been created for Aboriginal researchers to provide new meaning and understanding of an aspect of the State Library’s heritage collections. Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. The Fellowship will result in one report and public presentation outlining the research findings and new understanding about the significance of State Library collections.

Researcher-in-Residence (2x $20,000)

Opportunity to research the newly digitised audio and audio-visual (AV) collections of the J.S. Battye Library of West Australian History. Will investigate and examine these collections to advance online discovery and curation. The Researchers-in-Residence will each produce a report outlining the research findings and help design future exhibition and interpretation proposals for the audio and audio-visual collections and other public program opportunities.

Applications close Friday 17 May 2024.
