Vale Clare Menck

It is with great shock and extreme sadness that we report the death of our President, Clare Menck on 31 January 2022. Clare died from a very aggressive liver cancer less than five weeks after her diagnosis, aged 44.

We honour Clare’s leadership of our organisation and her work as a professional historian. She had a sharp mind, and showed a strength and vision as well as a depth of historical knowledge and understanding that we will miss. Clare was respected by all who knew and worked with her.

Clare expressed to colleagues that she considered her legacy to be the ‘Thematic History of Western Australia’ which is soon to be published by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. It will be an invaluable resource to all of us, and to the State.

The Committee has expressed our sorrow to Clare’s family. She leaves behind her husband and soul mate, Tyson, and children Eva (12) and Edan (9).

Clare was Vice-President of the national PHA. The latest issue of the PHA e-bulletin ‘Historia’ includes messages from the President Carmel Black, and the co-editor Dot Wickham, which you can read here. (The photo above is from this issue.)

I am shocked and very saddened to read of Clare’s passing. It was a genuine pleasure to work with her.
