AGM & Professional Development weekend, Albany
From 9-11 October, fourteen PHA members gathered in Albany/Kinjarling on Menang Country for a Professional Development weekend.
We met at History Great Southern – Kaartdijin Biddi Albany on Friday night for a behind-the-scenes tour of the history collection and archive by Sue Lefroy. Sue kindly provided the venue for our Annual General Meeting. The President Jacqui Sherriff reflected on a busy year for our small but active membership of 44. All executive positions and committee members were returned for the coming year. After the AGM we went to the Town Hall for the opening of ‘Echoes and Voices’ Art Exhibition followed by dinner at the Premier Hotel.
The Great Southern Great History Conference was held on Saturday at the UWA campus, attracting more than 50 people. We enjoyed presentations from professional historians and archaeologists on a range of Great Southern historical topics. Special shout out to PHA members Lucy Hair and Malcolm Traill for ‘Chinese Western Australians: Albany connections’. There were three off-site field trips to choose from in the afternoon before the Sundowner. If you would like further information on any of the presentations or presenters, please email malcolm@thehistorytrail.com.au
On Sunday we enjoyed a curated tour of the Albany Snake Run by Sian Ferraz followed by a tour of Wattierup Oyster Bay fish traps by Menang knowledge holder Larry Blight. Those still in town enjoyed lunch together to wrap up a fabulous weekend!
Huge thank you to Malcolm Traill for his hard work and contribution not only to the GSGH conference but also for the PHA member events.
