History Slam at the 2026 State History Conference
What is a History Slam?
A History Slam is a fun event that invites historians and like-minded participants to share a special moment of Western Australian history… in just three minutes. Premised on the popular poetry slam concept – in which poets have a short time to enthral, excite, provoke and amaze their audience to gain the winning edge – the slam aims to promote history and research into our past in an exciting and fun format. If you have ever uncovered something amazing, sad, funny, poignant, tragic, weird, touching, bizarre, shocking or unexpected while researching, a History Slam is a unique way to share it.
What are the Rules?
The rules are simple – each slammer has three minutes, and three minutes ONLY. No PowerPoint or other audiovisual aids are allowed, but props, singing and dancing are encouraged. Be as loud, fun and entertaining as you like to win that coveted PHAWA Prize!
As an audience member you get to choose the winner, so make sure you clap the loudest for your favourite slammer! Audience participation is encouraged and makes the event all the livelier and more entertaining!
